Winter Update....

posted Feb 25, 2017, 7:23 PM by Gus Mihailovich   [ updated Feb 25, 2017, 7:25 PM ]

Here is a quick update to share some  recent  highlights from the school  as well as upcoming events ….

Promoting Healthy Active Kids!

TEC participated in the Winter Walk Day, an event which took place across Canada.  At Tecumseh we took this opportunity to come together as a school community,  and also promote a healthy active lifestyle with our students.

Students sampled two different types of infused water and the students were asked to select their favourite recipe. “Watermelon Mint”

was the winner!  This recipe will be our school’s entry for the infused water taste test challenge at the Burlington Mall on March 15.  We would like to thank the TEC Parent Council, and our Public Health Nurse [Ms. DeMaria] for their support making this event a great success!
Extracurricular Opportunities are an important part of promoting a healthy lifestyle—over 50 of our older students participated in a day of skiing at Mt St Louis Moonstone and this past month included the badminton season  and start of the basketball teams.

All of our grade 1-8 students are also currently enjoying club and sport options such as  ‘Beach Volleyball’ , ‘Games Club’, ‘Yoga’ , Debate Club’, ‘Newcomb Ball’ and the ‘Green Screen Video Club’ at Recess with  more options planned in the Spring.

Making A Difference!

….Acts of Kindness

In early February, classes paired up to make special cards as a means of spreading ‘acts of kindness’ in our community; bringing a smile to the faces of others and offering thanks.  Recipients included senior citizens in our neighbourhood, and Canadian Veterans, as well as patients at McMaster Sick Kids Hospitals.   It was also an opportunity to say thank-you to those who work to make a difference for our school community— Port Nelson United Church , Burlington, EastView and Charles Beaudoin School.

…..Charity Event for the Halton Learning Foundation

Two 'spirit building' events to support the HLF are planned for this Thursday, March 2. Our primary students will be invited to participate in a “squirrel/nut” staff vs students game during period 4 while older students will be able to watch a teacher - student basketball game during Period 5.    Students and their families are asked to consider supporting this worthwhile charity by bringing a 'toonie' or any small change to school this week to support the HLF - an organization that provides funds to Tecumseh for  new technology and library resources, new sports and recess equipment, as well as basic necessities to many Tecumseh families.  Thank you for helping to make a difference!

….Being Eco-Friendly

Most recently each class in the school received a  short introduction to  the role of the Classroom Eco Captain.  Each class was asked to select 2 students who will be the first pair of Eco Captains. These students will have the opportunity to help their classmates with the composting / recycling needs in their classroom.  The Eco Club is up and running at full speed and have many exciting things to share.

2017 off to great start at Tecumseh!

posted Jan 19, 2017, 6:20 PM by Gus Mihailovich

Just a quick update to share some of the news from in and  around the school as well as  upcoming events…...

  1. Our next Parent Council Meeting is scheduled for Monday January 23 from 6-7pm in the library.  It’s a great opportunity to meet other parents, learn about new learning initiatives,  and consider giving some of your time to help an upcoming event in the school!

‘Water Does Wonders’ - our students have been encouraged to drink water instead of ‘sugary drinks’ at school as part of our ongoing ‘Healthy Kids’ focus.  We have already ‘made the pledge’ to substitute ‘juice’ with ‘milk and water’ in our daily breakfast program, and the students are making great use of the additional ‘water filling station’ recently installed, courtesy of ‘Healthy Kids Burlington’ . Tecumseh is labeled a ‘Healthy School’ as a result of our ongoing effort to promote healthy, active living!

Reminding everyone of the importance of ‘Be Nice’ and ‘Make A Difference’, plans are in progress to have students participate in ‘acts of kindness’ in February to spread some goodwill in our community.  Special cards will be created in each class, with older students helping younger ones, for recipients that include seniors in nearby retirement homes; children at McMaster Sick Kids as well as  ‘Valentines for Veterans’.   We also will include our appreciations to two local churches [Port Nelson ; Burlington Alliance] and two helpful schools [Eastview and CR Beaudoin] for their generous donations recently.

A charity ‘staff - student’ basketball game’ to support the annual ‘Halton Learning Foundation’ drive is also in the works!

  1. Many extracurricular opportunities are currently underway as we start 2017 which include interschool leagues in badminton and basketball for our older students, and ‘intramurals’ [volleyball games] for students in K-8.  Additional details are available from the coaches and / or our  school website [tec.hdsb.ca].  These are all possible thanks to the staff volunteering their time and our students really let us know how much they enjoy these activities.

Upcoming Spirit Day -January 27 Favourite Book Character!

( in support of Family Literacy Day)

…...So lots of greats things happening in the school!

Student Learning is our ongoing focus as always.  February is report card month and teachers will begin constructing these reports in the next few weeks to communicate about student progress.  Parents can expect reports coming home at the end of that month.

...and a gentle reminder that Friday February 3rd is a PA Day [no classes for students] for staff.

Tecumseh School Improvement Plan 2016-17

posted Nov 19, 2016, 12:45 PM by Gus Mihailovich   [ updated Nov 19, 2016, 12:58 PM ]

This is the master plan developed each year and always in progress that captures the priorities for curriculum delivery and well being goals.  There are three main categories to help organize all of the initiatives that support the plan:

Literacy;  Math;  and  Equity / Well Being  [which includes 'healthy kids'; 'mental health'; 'bullying prevention'; 'safe, inclusive and positive school culture'].

The Ministry of Education and the Halton District School Board work closely together to assist the school level planning work using the 'School Effectiveness Framework' - a tool principals use to help develop the various aspects of the plan with the staff.  It is most important to always start with 'student need' in each category, then determine the appropriate student / staff action to implement the plan.  Parents are of course key partners in their child's learning which is why parent - teacher communication is such an important part of our work.  The 2016-17 plan is attached for your reference.

Tecumseh Bullying Prevention Plan 2016-17

posted Nov 19, 2016, 12:04 PM by Gus Mihailovich   [ updated Nov 19, 2016, 12:59 PM ]

We are very committed to providing a safe learning and teaching environment for our students.  At Tecumseh, while we are always striving to promote a sense of belonging and well being at the school, we are also always looking for ways to be 'better'. The 2016-17  'bullying prevention plan' [Ministry  mandated as part of the 'safe and accepting schools act'] is based on school level data, and intended to further promote a safe and inclusive school.

Making A Difference - Terry Fox Run rescheduled to Tuesday Oct 4

posted Sep 22, 2016, 2:44 PM by Gus Mihailovich   [ updated Oct 1, 2016, 12:15 PM ]

In support of Terry Fox, Tecumseh is planning our ‘School Run’ on Tuesday October 4th after lunch break.  Students are invited to donate any loose change up to that day [for the collection jar] for Cancer Research. For larger donations, families are encouraged to donate using a ‘cashless’ approach, on the Terry Fox’ website [see attachment below], which will also provide a tax receipt directly to you. Almost $1000 has been donated so far, which is fabulous!  Thank you for helping us to ‘make a difference’!

Breakfast Program 8:25 - 8:40 every morning!

posted Sep 22, 2016, 2:42 PM by Gus Mihailovich

Image result for cereal and yogurtBreakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. We believe it not only gives students the energy they need to learn, but also teaches them about healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. The Tecumseh Breakfast program which will begin on Monday September 26th is available everyday to our students in grades 1 - 8. A variety of nutritious options will be provided from 8:25 am - 8:40 am in the gymnasium. Students in kindergarten will enjoy healthy breakfast options in their classrooms upon morning entry. A special thanks to our partners, Halton For Food Thought, for supporting this program!
